Been breeding bettas for 3 years, so I like to think I know quite a bit. I think there are two issues here 1, what are the fish physiologically capable of living in, and 2, what do they require in order to thrive. I've experimented with all kinds of containers for bettas, and come to the conclusion that in order to maintain maximal growth rate, and an active disposition, the minimum size jar is 1 quart. The one quart mason jars allow enough room for the fish to turn around freely, and fully extend their fins and maintain their position in the water wherever they like (bottom, mid, top). Yes the labyrinth organ allows them to live in far less water, but not to thrive. Secondly, they are just as susceptible as other fish to issues associated with poor water quality. I believe this is the issue that becomes the limiting factor for growth- rate. I can only get around to switching out 20-50 jars of water once a week. And in that time period, it seems like 1 quart is about the minimum volume of water capable of "absorbing" the bioload. I hope this helps. Oh, by the way female bettas are quite active swimmers and make spectacular aquarium fish. My sorority tank full of twin tail blue and red dragon females usually get as many admirers as my reef, and cost me about $2000 less.

Just curious to know if in the humane treatment of said mice that you are willing to drive a fair distance away from your house to release the mouse so it wont find its way back into your home but... potentially someone elses warm abode? Ultimately that "could" lead to a less than desirable result being the abode is either inhabited by one who does not share the same warm and fuzzies about little woodland creatures or they just have a big cat.

All in all because we are human and us building domiciles to live in and diminishing availible land areas for native species could be considered "Playing God" or the simple fact that we just dont act on just instinct alone so small mice can suck it up and NOT have oreos for dinner.

But... were not being philisophical so... just leave out some lard and hope the next mouse has bad cholesterol

A week ago, i wanted to write this big long response to this. This week, i don't so much want to. Change of heart, no. I believe in what i said, i guess i was just venting due to the fact i went to someones house and saw a lot of animals (including 3 fish tanks) in poor shape. Other animals were in cages almost buried in their own feces. All the tanks were overgrown with coraline and had low water levels from lack of top off. The fish in the tanks looked stressed, but maybe that was just because they have never seen a large tattooed man before.

So yea, that was my round-about way of addressing my feelings and took it out on snap traps or a concept in general. Some people should just not be able to keep animals and i think i met one.

Yeah, I remember being pretty enthralled by all your ladies swimming around, it's a great tank.

I just have one betta in a 1.5 gallon.

What about the animal treatment of animals?

Saw on the news where a dog got hit by a car on a freeway. Another dog, not of the same house or same owner, dodged traffic to get to the injured dog and grabbed the injured dog by the neck with it's teeth and dragged it to safety while dodging traffic again! Both dogs lived! Is that amazing or what? Nothing human about it, all animal. I'm guessing it will be on utube soon.

So with the humane was of catching mice not working. about a week ago i had to pick up more traps and have since caught 5 mice. Would have been six but i wasn't fast enough. I trapped one in a room and tried to catch it with a bowl. Just picture me in Mouse Hunt... The hilarity ensued and it out ran me from my dining room, slipped out of a rolling bowl in my kitchen then took off downstairs to the laundry room (where this all started).

All humor aside, I have a mouse problem and for hygienic and health reasons have to get rid of them. The classic snap trap is by far the best solution to this issue. So I have sucked it up and hopefully can get this problem under control.

for the sake of being humane they make a trap that keeps the mouse alive so you can release it later. just release the mouse a good distance away from your house or you might catch the same mouse more than once. i think i saw them at home depot.

Maybe you can come up with a method of tagging them . Repeat offenders get fed to somebodys snake. Or maybe a three strikes penal system!
