I'm switching over from frozen to fresh seafood for my lion. How long does "fresh" food stay fresh in the fridge?

Thanks

i know from living in seattle and going to the famous fish market on the pier that moisture is the best way. so id buy in small quantities and store in a tuperware container. once or twice a day mist the fresh meats. im guessing use saltwater i cannot be sure thou i just saw in the market that they spray the seafood down. i would drain off all excess water thou. dont puddle the food. all the fish in the market were sitting on a slanted table so the water would drain off. i hope this helps, get a second opinion.

Stay with frozen. Your gonna have more nutrients in it. Frozen food is frozen right away and has little nutritional decay. Nebraska isn't known for great fresh seafood. It may not be bad, but chances are a lot of nutrients have broken down.

I guess my question can go for frozen too. After it's thawed, how long will it stay usable in the fridge?

It seems it'd be a little easier not to thaw out a tiny amount every night like I've been doing. That's why I was thinking of switching. I also have access to scraps of just about anything (crab, lobster, fish, etc) from a restaurant and didn't know how long they would last. I'm assuming they were frozen at some point but would not be when I got them.

Hopefully these aren't stupid questions, I just don't want to feed the big guy nasty food.

It still needs to be sealed in a ziplock or something because it will dry up quickly. With that in mind, I would think you could thaw up to 3 days worth and be safe. I agree that you should stick to frozen foods unless you're going to add something like Selcon, or follow another vitimin enriched recipe of fresh plus purpose made fish foods.

If you want your lion to have really fresh food you could do as I do and keep a 10 gallon tank with guppies. Guppies breed like crazy and make great food for saltwater fish as freshwater parasites won't affect saltwater fish. I also use them to feed my LPS.

Ideally, fresh food should have a greater nutritional content for the fish. Unless something is flash frozen, there is a good likelihood that many of the proteins have denatured. Thats not to say that this doesn't happen via digestion either way- just something to think about.

Many of the frozen foods are already vitamin enriched, pretty much have to order Selcon online otherwise.
